Greetings League Friends!
We are midway through a hot, hot, hot summer of voter education and voting rights activism at LWVLA in July 2025.

LWVLA President M. Christian Green represented our state at the LWVUS National Council held last month at the National Conference Center in Leesburg, Virginia. The three-day Council meeting focused on LWV’s ongoing commitment to our policy of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” in service of building a strong, multiracial democracy. Other highlights included the unveiling of:(1) the League’s new national “Unite & Rise 8.5” campaign to register, educate, and activate 8.5 million voters before the 2026 midterm elections AND (2) the League’s new position on the Federal Judiciary.

The month has also been full of Good Trouble in honor of the late Congressman John Lewis of Georgia—a stalwart defender of voting rights who passed away five years ago on July 17. Much in the way that our LWV of Lafayette chapter tabled last month at Juneteenth, LWV of Iberia was out in advance of the official Lewis commemoration with a table at a Good Trouble rally under the oaks and moss in New Iberia. The New Iberia rally was featured on local news broadcasts and even received a callout on at least on national news program.
It seems to come earlier each year, but it is back-to-school next month! Our local leagues in New Orleans, St. Tammany, and Tangipahoa are already working with school superintendents and officials to register young voters in high schools, community colleges, and universities. And we know that our Caddo-Bossier league, known for its big event tabling in North Louisiana will continue its good work educating voters at churches, job fairs, and elsewhere.

At the state level, LWVLA continues strong programs of litigation and legislative advocacy to protect voter rights. We recently received word that we were awarded yet another “Making Democracy Work” grant for the 2025-2026 year. Nationwide, the League has seen a surge of 10,000 new members since we switched to a new, centralized membership system this February. So, if you’re not with us, join us, tell your friends, and consider a tax-deductible donation to fund our voter education work and/or a non-tax deductible donation to fund our advocacy and operations.
In League,
Your LWVLA State Board
